Information for schools

Cost

The annual fee for Law School Jr. is £2,350. The fee covers tuition, assessment marking, and all course materials, for up to 16 students.

We may able to arrange sponsorship to cover part or possibly all of the fee, or use the school’s own reprographics facilities to reduce the cost.

Resource requirements

The programme requires a suitable classroom or similar teaching space, but does not require any IT provision.

The programme can be arranged as an after-school activity, or time-tabled.

Selection

Law School Jr does not select students, and will accept all students recommended by you. Students with strong academic skills will tend to do better, but students with special educational needs have been able to fully participate and have been able to make good contributions. The course is designed so as to be able to challenge more able students whilst still engaging less able ones.

Raising interest

We will be glad to come and address students to help identify interest. This could be a short talk at an assembly, followed by an opportunity to register interest.

Numbers

The course is designed for 4 to 16 students. The ideal number is probably 6, but we have had a successful group of 19. The early seminars work well with higher numbers, and so you may like to encourage more students start on a provisional basis and drop out if they find law does not suit them and they are not enjoying it.

Qualification

Law School Jr. is a “training course” and not a regulated qualification. The position is reviewed periodically.

Testimonials

I am thrilled to have Law School Junior taking place at Sponne School.  Students have learnt key skills of analysis and debate and have gained an insight in to the world of Law.  Law School Junior ties in neatly with our Debating Society and helps students to develop logical arguments as well as increase their confidence with public speaking.  Law School Junior is also an excellent addition to the UCAS personal statement which helps our students to stand out amongst others and has supported students with their applications to courses such as Law, Drama, Politics and Teaching.  I would highly recommend this course and am delighted that our students have been able to participate in such a valuable extra curricular activity.

Victoria Austin - Head of Sixth Form, Sponne School

The student voice was immediately positive about the sessions and this has remained the case throughout the academic year. Students have gained a good understanding of the Law and have been enthused to study it. They have appreciated Oliver’s warm and interesting style and indeed his gift to deliver the content to this age group. There is little doubt that the participation of the students in Year 13 has aided their applications to law courses and given them confidence as they approach University.

I myself was able to attend the “Mock Trial” at the end of the programme and I was impressed by the serious preparation of the students and their contributions in questioning and cross-examining witnesses who were A level Drama Students in the Sixth Form.
